While I’ll be blogging my current projects, one thing I’m excited to do is go back and share quilts I’ve made in the past. There’s something fun about having used them for a while and being able to tell more of their story.
I finished this quilt last summer. I’m not a very fast quilter, I think I started it a year and a half before. When my sister found out she was having a baby boy, I told her she could pick a quilt from my then current in progress stash. She picked this one (which was no surprise as it definitely was the best one at the time).
I had an image of this quilt saved on Pinterest for quite a while and simply worked out how I wanted to make the quilt myself. That’s typically how I create quilts. It’s not difficult when the quilt design is simple like this (it’s just nine patches and squares).
I wish I could remember what size I made the nine patches, sashing, and mini nine patches…unfortunately I never wrote it down.
I did try a couple different colors for the sashing. Red and blue if I remember correctly…cream was by far the prettiest. I loved picking and using different cream fabrics (instead of all one fabric). It really softens the look. I’m on a scrappy kick right now (thanks to the quilter Blue Elephant Stitches’ influence) and keep pushing my quilts scrappier and scrappier. I might be hitting my limit – I’ll write more about it when I share my most current makes. All that to say, I think this quilt hits a lovely balance. It’s soft and feels authentic in the way scrappy quilts do but without being too busy or uncoordinated.
I patched together three fabrics for the back, a soft yellow linen, a blue floral lawn, and a bold yellow print. I quilted it on my Phaff power quilter (a sit down quilting machine) using a leaf and stalk pattern and orange peel pattern (I think that’s what it’s called). I stitched the binding on with fun stitches using pearl cotton and love the look (another Blue Elephant Stitches tip, I know I keep mentioning her – check out her books and blog).

I don’t give away many quilts! You hear quilters say, “you can only have so many quilts.” I definitely haven’t hit that stage in my quilting career. Now that I’ve written this…I guess I have given away five quilts in the last two years. They went to my mom, grandma, and sisters which somehow doesn’t seem like giving them away. Maybe because I know how much they’re loved. What about you? Do you give your precious creations away?
